“I am pleased to inform the community that the Town of Cortlandt has won this bid and the Town Board and I unanimously agree to proceed with the acquisition of this property for several community needs and projects,” said Town Supervisor Linda G. Puglisi in a statement
Town officials placed the bid a few months ago to purchase the property, which is off Broadway and Eleventh streets in the Verplanck hamlet. The purchase price was not immediately released. The Public Service Commission (PSC) must approve Cortlandt’s purchase of the Con Edison property.
Once the purchase is finalized, the town plans to keep the “Letteri” field for youth sports programs, according to Puglisi. Officials intend to add new all purpose fields, which can be used to play a variety of sports including baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer.
The Highway Division of Cortlandt's Department of Environmental Services (DES) will also relocate from its current Eighth Street garage site in Verplanck to the new property at Broadway and Eleventh streets. Other DES departments, such as parks and water, may also be relocated.
The transaction also halts the proposed West Point Partners project, which would have erected a 50 foot high around-the-clock buzzing sounds converter station.
“Literally the purchase of this property will be a ‘home run’ for everyone,” Puglisi said.
