Three Burglaries in Cortlandt Believed to be Linked

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. – State Police are investigating three burglaries in the Mohegan Lake area they believe could be related, all of which took place mid-day, two of which took place Monday afternoon. All three burglaries involved stolen cash, and there was no forced entry into any of the residences.

Monday, around 2 p.m., a Stuart Road resident in the Allendale neighborhood in Cortlandt said an unknown white male rang her doorbell. After the resident looked through the peephole, and didn’t recognize the subject, she went back up to her room, where about five minutes later she saw another white male in her bathroom.

A dog in the residence ran to the bathroom as the subject locked the door. Entry was gained to the bathroom through an open window, where a screen had been removed. The subject left through the same window. No property was taken, and the resident described the subject as having short blonde hair.

While police were investigating the first incident, a neighbor arrived home. After the second resident checked her home for stolen property she found cash missing from her bedroom. The subject entered and exited the second residence through an unlocked patio door on the side of the residence.

“She actually pulled in the driveway at that point,” said State Police Senior Investigator Brian Hoff, “and she actually noticed her sliding glass door open.”

State Police believe the two Monday burglaries are linked to a third burglary which took place on September 14, when a Lake Street resident returned home mid-afternoon, reached into her closet to find her sneakers, and inadvertently grabbed a burglar’s leg.

The Lake Street burglar also stole cash from the bedroom. The only available description of the September 14 burglar was that he was white or Hispanic, wearing dark sneakers with yellow or beige socks, with an unknown type of shorts.

“These burglaries have the same MO,” said Hoff, “there’s no forced entry into any of these residences.” Hoff advised residents to “exercise vigilance in the neighborhood, and keep and eye out for suspicious activity, and call us immediately.”

Residents reporting suspicious activity should report it immediately to State Police in Cortlandt, at (914) 737-7171, or SP Cortlandt BCI at (914) 788-8044.
