The cables connect more than 40 sections of structural steel to the four 419-foot main span towers of the bridge, the first section set to open later this year.
The stay cables are comprised of numerous metal strands, tightly packed in a protective sheath. After the initial installation process, workers will install additional strands inside the sheath to provide further strength.
During the installation of the cables, a small gap is left in the main span that will be filled with structural steels in the near future.
Once that step is completed it will connect the westbound bridge from Westchester to Rockland counties.
Workers will also continue to anchor and tension the stay cables on the eastbound bridge. To date, 110 of the project’s 192 stay cables have been completed.
In addition to the cable installation, work will resume this week on the girder assembly installation on the eastbound bridge. Four assemblies will be installed on two piers near the Rockland landing with the project’s largest crane.
