The town of Mount Pleasant, Metropolitan Transportation Authority and state Department of Transportation are seeking public comments on permanently closing the crossings during an 8 p.m. hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
On Feb. 3, 2015, Ellen Brody of Edgemont was killed when a northbound Metro-North train collided with her Mercedes SUV. Five male passengers on the commuter train also were killed when the railcars they were in caught fire. Multiple lawsuits were filed in the fatal crash. Ken Noonan of Concerned Residents of Valhalla said the closing of the Commerce Street and Cleveland Street crossings "is possibly the most important issue to come before the residents of Mount Pleasant since the closing of the road over the Kensico Dam post 9/11."
