MONTROSE, N.Y. -- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has granted Spectra Energy permission to start prep work in Montrose on its Algonquin Pipeline project.

In a letter sent Tuesday, FERC said it granted an April 21 request to construct, modify and/or use the construction work areas for the project. One of the work areas is the Hudson East Yard in Montrose.

The expansion of the Spectra Algonquin pipeline recently received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The project involves replacing about 20.1 miles of natural gas pipeline that is 26 inches in diameter with larger pipeline material of 42 inches in diameter, according to FERC.

"We have determined that Algonquin’s Initial Implementation Plan... includes the information necessary to meet the pre-construction conditions in the Commission’s... Order Issuing Certificate," Magadeline Suter, environmental project manager for FERC wrote.

Suter said the approval does not grant Algonquin the authority to utilize any additional workspaces that were not approved in the order.

"I remind you that Algonquin must comply with all applicable remaining terms and conditions of the above referenced order as well as procedures stipulated in your previous filings," Suter wrote.

The pipeline goes through Rockland County, crosses the Hudson River to Westchester and Putnam before crossing the Connecticut state line into Fairfield County, according to FERC.

An existing compressor station in the Putnam County town of Southeast would undergo several changes, according to FERC. The work includes adding a 10,320-horsepower compressor unit that is natural-gas fired and adding gas cooling for it, FERC notes.
