Police Investigate Hanging At Peekskill Parking Garage

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill Police are investigating the death of a man who was seen hanging from the James Street Parking Garage.

Police first heard about the incident at 3:30 p.m. Police at the scene declined to provide any further details, but said it took about an hour to clear the scene. Park Street was closed while police, fire and emergency personnel arrived. According to published reports, dozens of people, including children, witnessed the incident.

Onlookers said they heard a noise that sounded like a loud boom before they looked up and saw the man had hung himself.

According to Peekskill Police Chief Eric Johansen, the man tied a rope to the third level of the garage and jumped with the other end around his neck. Johansen said police are investigating the death as a suicide.

Johansen said police did not know his age and that family has not been notified.
