CARMEL, N.Y. Carmel Police said they spent more than three hours interviewing the only surviving member of the Sullivan family and said they will continue to question anyone who may have witnessed Tuesday's horrific blaze.
The investigation is continuing and neighbors, responding emergency personnel who responded to the fire and anyone else who could supply additional information will be interviewed and/or re-interviewed by detectives of the Carmel Police Department and Putnam County Sheriffs Department, Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson told the media in a statement.
Thomas Sullivan Jr., the sole surviving member of the family, was interviewed for three-and-a-half hours Wednesday, according to police. Samples from the scene of the fire were sent to the New York State Police Lab and Johnson said the investigation will continue early next week, when law enforcement and the Putnam County Fire Investigation Team to evaluate information and possibly ascertain the cause of the fire.
The fire claimed the lives of Larchmont Police Capt. Thomas Sullivan, 48, his wife Donna, 47, and daughters Meaghan, 17, and Mairead, 15.
The remains of the residence, on 19 Wyndham Lane in Carmel, are no longer being secured by police personnel, since Johnson said all samples and potential evidence needed from the scene have been taken.
Police said they will not comment on the case during wake and funeral, out of respect for the Sullivan family. A two-day wake for the four victims family will be held Thursday and Friday, followed by a funeral Saturday.
On behalf of the Town of Carmel Police Department, I wish to share our condolences to Tom Jr. and the relatives of the Sullivan family on this tragic loss to them and to the community, wrote Johnson in the same release.
The chief said the funerals are expected to be well-attended, with as many as 1,000 people expected because of the numerous friends, colleagues and family of all the deceased.
The wake will be held at Balsamo-Cordovano Funeral Home at 15 Church St. in Carmel on Thursday and Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. James Church, 14 Gleneida Ave., Carmel.
