Entergy Corporation, which purchased the third Indian Point reactor in 2000 and the second in 2001, began the process for a renewing the facility's 20-year license in 2007. Indian Point's Unit 2 and Unit 3 must have their licenses renewed by 2014 and 2016, respectively.

"As it always does, the NRC will provide continuous oversight through this period, and has performed many thousands of hours of inspections and reviews beforehand specifically to ensure appropriate safety preparations were made for this period," Indian Point officials said in a release.

The release also stated that Entergy has invested more than $1 billion in upgrades and enhancements in the facility. The company also says in the statement it has more than $100 million since the Sept. 11, 2011 terrorist attacks to strengthen security.

Indian Point, which generates approximately 25-percent of the New York City and Westchester County's electricity, has been noted for controversy, including as recently as July of this year when a former supervisor was charged with fabricating records.
