New Rochelle Neighborhood Group Discusses Issues

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The South of North New Rochelle neighborhood association discussed concerns about neighborhood crime and planned several events for the upcoming year at its first meeting of the year Friday.

Downtown business owners, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester staff, New Rochelle residents and New Rochelle District Three City Council member Jared Rice were in attendance to discuss the concerns of the community at the meeting, held at Coromandel Cuisine on Division Street.

“It’s good to be able to hear sides from different perspectives speak about issues such as parking and vandalism,” said Rice.

Davenport Loft resident Keith O’Brien expressed concern about the parking situation throughout the downtown area of the city.

“The parking really causes problems for everyone,” said O’Brien.

Council member Rice provided information for residents about the status of the downtown parking situation, mentioning that current measures are part of a trial run to see what works best for everyone in New Rochelle.

In addition to talking about concerns about crime, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester and downtown apartment building Davenport Loft resident Jim Killoran also discussed plans to continue helping to revive the downtown business district.

The group discussed intentions for a Mardi Gras celebration, a spring sale festival, sidewalk sales, Christmas sales and a neighborhood association neighborhood party.

“Community is all about fun,” said Killoran.

The association has scheduled meetings for the last Friday of every month throughout the rest of the year. The group next meets Feb. 24.
