CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- A new political party is hoping to bring more openness and transparency to the Village of Croton-On-Hudson, according to its chair.
Croton United is a nonpartisan political organization that recently named Bob Anderson, John Brijeski and Virginia Calcutti as its three candidates for the village elections in November.
"We're proud to offer the voters of Croton a choice of three individuals with diverse strengths and experience," Croton United Chair Roseanne Schuyler said.
One of Croton United's main tenets is that national parties and partnerships do not have a role in local government.
“Our members are Democrats, Republicans and independents," Schuyler said. "As for our candidates, two are registered Democrats, while the third has no party affiliation.”
The party was formed in May as Schuyler feels village government has not been open and transparent enough.
"We really feel the public deserves to know more," Schuyler said. "We want to be actively engaged in getting the public's opinion and respond to comments and questions that the public puts forth."
Schuyler said the village should make information more public rather than forcing people to submit Freedom Of Information Law (FOIL) requests. Schuyler said she was disappointed the board approved a budget that exceeded the state mandated two percent cap on the tax levy.
"We want to bring back fiscal sanity to the board," Schuyler said.
The reaction to the party has been positive so far, Schuyler said.
"We've had a lot of engagement with village residents," Schuyler said. "There is a tremendous feeling that people in the village are ready for a choice. They are listening to our candidates."
Anderson, a Croton resident for forty years, has volunteered with the Croton Caring Committee for 12 years.
Brijeski has lived in Croton for twelve years and coaches soccer in AYSO.
Calcutti spent 24 years with the Croton Harmon School District and was a member of the Croton Emergency Services Committee and color guard instructor for the Croton Cardinals Drum and Bugle Corps. Calcutti is an active member of the Croton Senior Citizens Club.
