The governor said the 500 kW installation will provide “clean, renewable energy” to the hospital’s campus and save it about $96,000 a year.
Funding for the project came from the state’s Energy Research and Development Authority, which provided $358,000 from the governor’s $1 billion NY-Sun initiative.
The array, developed by J. Ranck Electric, Inc, will contribute to the state's nearly 600 percent increase in solar capacity over the past four years, Cuomo said.
It will be thoroughly tested before it is interconnected to the power grid.
Cuomo said the project advances both his Reforming the Energy Vision, or REV, strategy and the recently enacted Clean Energy Standard, a nation-leading mandate to supply 50 percent of electricity from renewable energy resources by 2030.
“This solar project will allow the VA to care for our veterans while cutting costs and protecting the environment," the governor said.
Calling New York “a leader in clean energy development,” he said the state has passed “the most ambitious clean energy standard in the nation.”
The standard, he added, “will foster more smart projects such as this one and will make for a stronger, greener and more sustainable New York for all.”
REV is also stimulating investment in clean technologies, Cuomo said.
According to the governor, it has already enabled more than 105,000 low-income homeowners to permanently cut their energy bills and has created thousands of jobs in manufacturing, engineering and other clean-tech sectors.
The state is aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030, Cuomo said.
