It is wrong to assert that because damaged and missing bolts were discovered during planned maintenance at Indian Point, the plant is not safe (Indian Point Reactor Closed to Fix Faulty Bolts, March 30).

On the contrary, Entergy’s voluntary report to the public proves that the plant is run with rigorous maintenance and safety protocols that are working exactly as they should.

The issue was discovered through an extremely comprehensive program of inspection and preventive maintenance specifically designed to identify and correct—proactively—any potential issues. Safe operation is the first priority, and with the replacement of the bolts, safe operation will be assured when the plant goes back online.

Nonetheless, Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling anew for Indian Point to close based on unfounded fears. This defies logic. The Governor’s Clean Energy Standard to significantly reduce carbon emissions can’t be met without Indian Point. He’s acknowledged very wisely that nuclear power is an essential “bridge” to a clean energy future, and he’s even trying to keep financially struggling upstate nuclear plants open.

Yet his push to close Indian Point will cause carbon emissions in New York to spike. The Governor should stop trying to deprive us of a safe plant that is a reliable source of both baseload electricity and thousands of jobs.

Indian Point generates power without emitting carbon. It continually meets independent, high safety standards.

For New York to thrive and have a clean energy future, we need Indian Point.
