To the Editor:

Last week, the Girl Scout float made its debut in the 90th Anniversary Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The float’s theme, “Building a Better World,” displayed the very definition of what a Girl Scout does in her community.

Approximately 30,000 girls throughout our seven counties (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties) prove this every day through their leadership and community service.

Girls of courage, confidence and character only thrive through the dedicated guidance of our volunteers. “Building a Better World” simply could not be done without our volunteers.

So who is a Girl Scout volunteer?

We often imagine mothers and fathers, grandparents and aunts as typical volunteers. Yet, Girl Scout volunteers and leaders are anyone with a desire and a vision to make a difference for and through the lives of girls.

The young professional, the artist, the retiree and anyone in between can help drive this ever-changing movement with more than a century of momentum behind it.

Our volunteers provide a safe environment for girls to learn, grow and develop leadership skills that last a lifetime. Despite demands of busy lives, our volunteers shine because they step up and commit to girls. For their efforts, they walk away with so much more than they ever imagined.

The world is changing, and girls are counting on us to steer them toward a future they will help shape.

Throughout the lower Hudson Valley, we have thousands of girls we could serve but are not able to due to a lack of adult volunteers.

It takes a village to inspire girls, and we would like to invite you to be a part of ours. Investing your time and your energy in girls can truly change the world.

Do you have what it takes? If you believe in girls, we need you.

Interested in volunteering, please contact Amanda D’Ambrosio, director of recruitment, at 914-860.4162, ext. 745, or email adambrosio@girlscoutshh.org.
