SHRUB OAK, N.Y. - The majority of students in the Lakeland Central School District in grades three to eight exceeded the state and Westchester County in proficiency levels on math and English Language Arts (ELA) tests given last April.
The State Education Department reported average scores on this year's exams were slightly higher than in 2011.
"There is some positive momentum in these numbers," said Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch.
Overall, Lakeland students achieved higher than the 55.1 percent of students statewide who scored a 3 or 4 on the ELA exam and 64.8 percent who scored 3 or 4 on the math exam.
On the math exam, 81.1 percent of the 454 third-graders in Lakeland met or exceeded proficiency; 78 percent of the 401 fourth-graders; 81.3 percent of the 449 fifth-graders; 59.1 percent of the 474 sixth-graders; 79.2 percent of the 476 seventh-graders and 82.1 percent of the 465 eighth-graders.
All Lakeland students also exceeded Westchester averages in math, other than in sixth-grade, where the county average was 73.1 percent.
On the ELA exam, Lakeland students exceeded the state and county averages. In third-grade, 80.6 percent met or exceeded proficiency; 70.8 percent in fourth-grade; 76.2 percent in fifth-grade; 68.7 percent in sixth-grade; 69.7 percent in seventh-grade and 74.1 percent in eighth-grade.
