The unit shutdown following the failure of an electrical switch in a switchyard external to the plant, according to Patricia Kakridas, nuclear communications for Entergy.
The switchyard is located across the street from Indian Point and receives electricity generated by the plant before distributing it out to the electrical grid, Kakridas said.
The failure of the breaker resulted in Indian Point Unit 3’s main electrical generator shutting down as a protective measure, Kakridas said.
Kakridas said all equipment operated as designed during the shutdown and plant operations personnel performed as expected and there was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public.
