The unit automatically shut down following the incident, which occurred at 7:20 p.m., according to Jerry Nappi, manager of nuclear communications at Entergy.

Nappi said the shutdown was a protective measure and did not know the cause of the external electrical disturbance.

There was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of works or the public, Nappi said.

"All equipment operated as expected during the shutdown," Nappi said.

Unit 3 had returned to service on May 24 following replacement of a main electrical transformer which had failed and caught fire on May 9. Unit 2 has been operating at full power for 454 continuous days.
