Indian Point to Test Sirens Wednesday Morning

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Indian Point Nuclear Power Plants will perform a test of the siren systems Wednesday morning, plant officials said in a release.

The sirens will sound at full volume for about four minutes between 10:30 and 11 a.m. in Westchester, Putnam, Orange and Rockland counties, plant officials say. They add that no action is necessary on the part of the public.

Residents are asked to remember that if sirens were to sound during a real emergency, they would be a signal to residents to tune into a local Emergency Alarm System radio or television station for important information and directions. Officials said the sirens themselves would not be a signal to evacuate.

Emergency Alarm System radio and TV stations are listed in emergency planning booklets provided by a resident’s county. More information on Indian Point’s sirens is available at the New York State Office of Emergency Management website, or through Westchester County’s website.

A public hearing on Indian Point Nuclear Power Plants will be presented by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Thursday evening in Tarrytown regarding the plant's 2011 safety assessment.
