BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- If folks in Buchanan and the surrounding area heard what sounded like gunfire on Friday, they should not be worried, says a spokeswoman for Entergy Corporation. It's only a scheduled drill.

Patricia Kakridas said that security officers participated in a training drill at the Indian Point Energy Center during the day on Friday. They used a simulated weapons system during the exercises.

Local law enforcement agencies were given advance notice of the drill.

The security officers used Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System -- or MILES -- gear during the drill. Think laser tag, but far more high-tech.

These systems involve special laser weaponry which duplicates the effects, including sound, of live ammunition. MILES gear is used for military and counter-terrorism training across the country.

Indian Point houses two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.

Entergy Corporation owns and operates power plants generating a total of  about 30,000 megawatts of electric capacity, including nearly 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power. The company delivers electricity to nearly 3 million utility customers.
