Entergy’s engineers and an independent engineering firm traced the transformer problem to the failure of internal insulation that caused a short circuit in a high-voltage winding coil, Entergy said. The fire posed no threat to the public.
According to the NRC's quarterly report, the plant's fire brigade applied foam to extinguish the fire. A reflash of the fire occurred and was extinguished.
"The inspectors verified that Entergy personnel identified deficiencies, openly discussed them in a self-critical manner, and documented issues...as required," the NRC wrote in its report.
NRC inspectors praised Entergy for having employees wearing proper gear, having proper equipment and using appropriate firefighting techniques.
"The employees on our fire brigade go through extensive training when they are first hired and are trained periodically throughout the year," Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi said. "This prepares them to respond to a situation like this."
Nappi said while employees don't expect to deal with a transformer fire, they are well prepared if it actually happens.
