Westchester County Police have identified the man found dead from apparent exposure to the cold after leaving a Valhalla shelter in just his pajamas.

Kim Berryman, 35, who had been living at the Volunteers of America homeless shelter on the Grassland Reservation , has been identified as the man found dead Friday after leaving the shelter in a pair of pajama pants and a T-shirt in an erratic state around 4 a.m., said Kieran O'Leary, spokesman for the Westchester County Police.

Berryman, a native of Texas, who has been living for the last 10 to 12 years in the Yonkers and Manhattan area, appears to have died from hypothermia due to exposure to the cold, although toxicology results are pending, O'Leary said.

After Berryman left, shelter officials immediately contacted police who sent out search crews, including K-9 units, O'Leary said.

"The K-9 officer said it was 10 degrees when he arrived on site to search, so we believe weather could be a factor in his death," O'Leary said. "A person can suffer hypothermia quite quickly in those temperatures."

Units, including a helicopter after daylight, searched the area, which includes the jail and a hospital for more than six hours to locate the missing man, he added.

He was found by a K-9 dog in a bushy area behind a home on Taylor Street in Greenburgh.
