Hundreds Try, But Few Score Black Friday Deals

CORTLANDT, NY – The holiday season seems to start earlier every year and, apparently, so does Black Friday.

This year several stores in Northern Westchester opened at midnight Friday with "doorbuster" deals to lure the biggest bargain hunters. At the Cortlandt Town Center, hundreds lined up outside Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Old Navy and GameStop hoping to  snag a bargain late Thursday night.

The line at Best Buy snaked around the parking lot and almost down to the Pier 1 Imports building. Staff began letting shoppers in five at a time a little before midnight. Sue Brown of Putnam Valley hoped to get an Xbox game system for $199, but wasn’t sure there would be any left by the time she got into the store.

“Who knows, there are so many people here,” Brown said.

The Lai family of Briarcliff also waited in line.  Daughter Phyllis hoped to get a 24-inch Dynex TV that was on sale but didn’t like her odds, either.

“Slim to none,” she estimated.

At Wal-Mart, three county police cars blocked off the store entrance as officers helped maintain order while shoppers filed in starting at 10 p.m. Lines remained long even after midnight.

Dan McQuid of Ossining said he and his friends hoped to get one of the hot new video games Wal-Mart advertised for $30, but found only a few copies of each game were sold at that price. They hoped they would have better luck at Best Buy.

“They had the display case with all the games that were on sale but then they said they were in men’s apparel and they were completely sold out,” McQuid said. “They didn’t say in the advertisements that there would only be a couple of promo copies.”

Down the road at the Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown, only American Eagle Outfitters, Hollister and Macy’s chose to open at midnight this year, with many other stores opening later in the morning.

Siblings Billy and Loraine Wade of Somers were disappointed to find out that only a few stores were open yet in the mall but said they still got some deals shopping with their family at American Eagle.

“I got pants for $24, which is pretty cheap,” Billy said.
