Highland Avenue in Verplanck Gets Honorary Title

VERPLANCK, N.Y. -- In a last minute addition to the Town of Cortlandt’s agenda on July 19, Councilman Francis Farrell suggested that Highland Avenue between 6th Street and 8th Street use Our Lady of Mount Carmel as an honorary title for the avenue.

Initially, it was suggested that the avenue, which is at the society's doorstep, be named somehow in honor of “Chubby” Capicotti, but it was agreed upon several minutes later to incorporate the charitable group as a whole. Farrell said that it was clear the club continued to “feel the sting of his loss.”

Farrell also called “Chubby” Capicotti and his father the “backbone” of the club, and congratulated them on the longtime tradition of holding the Italian Feast. Verplanck’s Italian Feast is the longest running in the Hudson Valley. The Town of Cortlandt has not indicated that street signs will be changed to reflect the honorary title. Capicotti's son, Anthony Capicotti Jr., was this year's feast chairman.
