Freak October Snow Storm Downs Wires and Trees

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Con Edison is reporting over 5,000 homes in Croton, Cortlandt and Peekskill are without power, with widespread reports of fallen branches, limbs and downed wires. The freak October snowstorm has dumped over six inches of snow on Northern Westchester.

“Wires down all over, it’s a mess,” said Robert Porter, Chief of the Montrose Fire Department . "Our guidance is stay home and hang tight, Con Ed is not going to get to everyone right away. Power is probably going to be out for a significant period of time until they can get out there.”

Power restoration estimates have not yet been set for many areas. The Montrose Fire Department also said roads are blocked or partially blocked at Kings Ferry Road, Montrose Point Road, Crugers Station Road and Trolly Road, among others.

The Montrose Fire Department and Croton Police Department say people appear to be staying in. Many residents have reported resigned to staying indoors for the night, and perhaps tomorrow, as events scheduled for the holiday weekend continue to be relocated and delayed because of the storm.

Croton police have closed Albany Post Road just north of Arrowcrest Drive in Croton, and have also closed Brook Street from Terrace Place to South Riverside Avenue because of a downed power pole.

“All other streets are passable at this time, some other streets have limbs down, and can be passable through one lane or another, but look for more,” said Sergeant John Barirde of the Croton Police Department.
