First Grade Poetry Reading Doesn't Leave a Dry Eye

Patricia Lynch’s class of first grade students, from Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School in Croton held a public poetry reading Thursday morning in the Black Cow to showcase their hard work throughout the school year.

Each student was introduced with a short biography which they had written, for example, “she likes to play, she likes to pillow fight, she likes to eat spaghetti,” and read two original compositions.

“When Mrs. Lynch says 'write,'” went Emily Grunes poem, “we say, 'How much?' and she says 'A lot.' and she means it!” The class rounded out the poetry reading by performing two songs, one of which was sung in English and sign language. The second song, “I am Your Child,” by Barry Manilow, left the audience of grandparents and parents dabbing their eyes and sniffling with approval.

“Writers go public with their work,” said Mrs. Lynch, “so what better place for us to go public with our work than the Black Cow, to show off our work to the public and the families,” Lynch said of the local coffee shop.

This is the 9th year that Lynch’s class has performed their poems at the Black Cow, and Lynch’s 22nd year teaching. Lynch is a Croton resident with three children in the Croton school system, one in 2nd grade, one in 7th grade, and one in 9th grade.
