PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — Firefighters were struggling early Thursday afternoon to get enough water to battle a structure fire at an apartment building on Lakeview Drive in Peekskill. As of 12:50 p.m., the fire was still raging.

All residents of the building's 16 apartments, about 40 people, were evacuated.  The Red Cross was on the scene and said it would help to find shelter for the victims. Peekskill Towers opened its recreation room to the displaced victims, as did the Peekskill recreation department, Police Chief Eric Johansen said.

Firefighters were instructed by authorities to open a hydrant on Highland Avenue to help bring water to the scene. Initial efforts were slowed when the first hydrant firefighters tried to open on Garfield Avenue caused a water main break, water department personnel said.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after it was reported at about 10:40 a.m.
