Croton Residents Struggled with Storm Flooding

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Croton residents struggled with heavy rains last Thursday, as Croton Police Department received a dozen calls from residents reporting flooded streets, basements and even a sewage backup. Manhole covers were even moved by the rain. Croton residents reported most of these hazardous incidents around 12 p.m. See the flooding at the ShopRite plaza in front of New York Sports Club in our video.

Thursday, June 23

1150 a.m. Albany Post Road was reported flooded at the bottom of Arrowcrest Drive.

12:00 p.m. Bungalow Road manhole cover was reported pushed off of hole.

12:00 p.m. Harrison Street resident reports basement flooded

12:02 p.m. Zeytinia grocery store on Maple Avenue reports being flooded, Croton Fire Department was dispatched.

12:03 p.m. Resident reports Grand Street flooded near laundromat.

12:06 p.m.  Young Avenue resident reports basement flooded, possible by sewage. Department of Public Works was dispatched and it was ascertained that it was indeed sewage. Engineering Department also contacted.

12:14 p.m. Route 129 was reported flooded, and cones and flares were placed near the flooding by the Croton Police Department.

12:23 p.m. Mount Airy Road resident reports basement flooded.

12:28 p.m. Radnor Avenue resident reports children playing with manhole cover.

12:36 p.m. A Mercedes was reported flooded at the bottom of Arrowcrest Drive.

12:37 p.m. Ossining reports that Route 9 and Route 9a have been shut down temporarily due to flooding.

12:44 p.m. Irving Avenue resident reports basement flooded.

10:10 p.m. A Pierre Van Cortlandt custodian reports four to five youths throwing rocks over the fence while he is taking out the garbage.

Friday, June 24

10:10 a.m. A deer is reported struggling on Route 9, the deer was dead upon officers arrival, and the deer was moved off of the road, and the Department of Transportation was notified.

4:13 p.m. Croton Fire Department was dispatched for a car fire on Route 9. The vehicle was located near the Montrose exit in the Town of Cortlandt.

Saturday, June 25

7:01 a.m. A large crevice was reported as opening up near the Bari Manor apartment complex. Property management was contacted.

11:56 a.m.  A caller reported a manhole cover dislodged on Emerson Avenue, probably due to flooding on Thursday. The Department of Public Works was notified.

2:20 p.m. A caller on Elliot Way, near Senasqua Park, reports a garbage bag with rubber gloves and dead fish in the park. Caller wanted information on how to have sign posted about problem. Department of Public Works and Park Rangers were notified, and the contents were disposed of.

3:18 p.m. An Olcott Avenue resident reported that his car’s from license plate was stolen while the vehicle was parked outside of his home. The plate number was logged as stolen.

Sunday, June 26

1:54 p.m. A tree was reported as blocking the roadway on Mount Airy Road. Residents and police officers were able to clear the roadway, and ConEdison was notified of a damaged power line.

2:25 p.m. A resident reported a fire on the Cortlandt side of the Croton River. The patrol boat was dispatched and the people gathering around fire were asked to extinguish the fire and cleanup, which they did.

2:59 p.m. Resident of Cleveland Drive reports people swimming below the Croton Dam, patrols asked people to exit the water.

Monday, June 27

8:55 a.m. A resident of North Riverside Avenue stated that he received calls from a company saying he had won $1.2 million, and that he needed to send $750 via Western Union as a processing fee, to receive his money. No money was sent, and police advised resident that this was a scam.

Wednesday, June 29

9:30 a.m. A Grand Street resident reported her 16-year-old niece hadn’t been home since the previous night. Police created a missing persons report, and interviewed some friends. The police eventually ascertained that the missing girl was probably in the city, in the 42nd precinct. The police of the 42nd precinct did find the girl staying with a friend, and the family was reunited.

10:29 p.m. An off duty police officer reported a vehicle possible driving while intoxicated on Route 9, travelling into Croton. Police stopped the vehicle near Stormytown Road, and after an investigation at the scene arrested the party for DWI and with a suspended license. No bail was set, at the recommendation of the Assistant District Attorney, because the party, 33-year-old Paul Dolan of Warwick, N.Y., has prior felony convictions. Dolan was lodged overnight in the Peekskill jail, and arraigned on Wednesday for charges. He is due back in court this coming Wednesday.
