“This is an exciting time for the Croton Community Coalition. As we enter our sixth year, the continuation grant will allow us to develop new, innovative and award-winning programs that proactively keep our Croton teens safe and drug-free. In partnership with the school district, the village and with the support from a variety of community sectors, we are making a difference in a very public way,” said Dean.
The coalition acts as a resource for Croton teens and parents to make informed choices about drug and alcohol use. With this new grant, the coalition plans to focus more of its efforts on educating parents, teens and the community in general about the dangers of prescription drugs as a gateway drug to heroin use.
“Local issues involving subtance use and abuse require local solutions. The coalition plays a vital role in our community by providing information and resources to our students and their families. I applaud the coalition for reapplying to receive this competitive Drug Free Community grant and for working in the best interest of our Croton youth,” said Edward Fuhrman, superintendent of Croton-Harmon Schools.
Croton was one of 14 communities in Westchester and Rockland counties and one of 680 communities nationwide to receive a DFC grant this year.
The coalition, in 2009, was originally awarded a competitive five-year federal Drug Free Communities grant of $125,000 a year with in-kind matching donations of time and materials.
