CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- A record number of prescription drugs were turned in during the Croton Community Coalition's Semi-Annual Prescription Drug Take Back Day in Croton-on-Hudson.

In addition to the unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions turned in during the event, Croton Police also turned over prescription drugs collected from the department's drop box.

In total, 22 boxes of prescription drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency — by far the most ever.

“We are so thrilled to be making a social change in how we dispose of our prescription drugs. This annual event gives the Croton community an avenue for proper disposal so that these medications don't fall into the hands of children and teens. At the same time, these expired prescriptions are no longer making their way into our drinking water supply,” said Laurie A. Dean, Croton Community Coalition coordinator and chairwoman.

While the official total weight of the prescription drugs collected will not be determined for a few days, it is expected to be more than 500 pounds — the most ever collected in Croton.

The Croton Community Coalition sponsors the drug take back day, which is held twice a year, with the support of the Croton-on-Hudson Police Department who help staff the drop-off center and pack the prescriptions for safe transport by the DEA.
