CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- The Croton Chorale will perform some of the music of C.P.E. Bach at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 17 Old Post Road South.
The Croton Chorale is a 35-person chorus and orchestra, led by conductor Bob Collins, Asbury’s Chancel Choir director. The group plans to honor C.P.E. Bach, son of Johann Sebastian Bach, in celebration of the 300th anniversary of his birth. The concert will be a re-creation of a concert that Bach presented, which included many of his personal favorites, in the 1780s. The work was called "Magnificat" and is a playful symphony in D major, and "Heilig ist Gott," a short motet for double choir. The chorale will also play two other pieces that Bach had included in his presentation, portions of J.S. Bach’s B-Minor Mass and the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s "Messiah." The Croton Chorale is Asbury Church’s community choir and orchestra, which was founded in 2000 to present Handel’s "Messiah" around Christmas each year. Since that time, the group has also performed many other shows, including the music of Beethoven, Faure, Haydn, Purcell, Vaughan, Vivaldi and Williams, as well as the work of Collins himself and some other local composers. The chorale’s performances are all benefits for local nonprofit organizations. The C.P.E. Bach celebration proceeds will go to the Cortlandt Emergency Food Bank. Suggested contributions to attend the concert are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors or students, and no donation for children younger than 12.
