Cortlandt Roads Blocked, Wires Still Down After Sandy

Cortlandt, NY -- Fifty town roads were closed due to downed trees and wires and 4,000 homes in Cortlandt were still without power Tuesday following Hurricane Sandy.

The Hudson River shoreline of the hamlet of Verplanck was severely flooded by Hurricane Sandy, which struck Monday afternoon and evening.

The Hendrick Hudson School District will remain closed Wednesday.  Furnace Woods Elementary School and Blue Mountain Middle School were without power. Superintendent Brian Monahan said there was still too much storm debris and too many roads remained blocked to safely allow school buses to travel.

Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi is urging residets to stay off the roads and in their homes.

The Muriel H. Morabito Center, powered by a generator, remains open. Town offices were closed Tuesday but highway department crews continued to work to clear roads and debris and the town was still operating an emergency operations center.

Montrose Fire Department personnel said they received more than 50 calls between 5 p.m. Monday evening and noon Tuesday. The Verplanck Fire Department could not be reached for comment.
