Colbert Named To Replace Westchester's Letterman On 'Late Show'

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Stephen Colbert will replace North Salem resident David Letterman as the host of "The Late Show" upon Letterman's retirement, CBS announced on Thursday.

Colbert has been the host of "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central since 2005. The show has garnered critical acclaim as well as two Peabody awards and four Emmys. 

Before  hosting his own show, Colbert was a correspondent and writer on "The Daily Show" for eight years. 

“Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,” Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS said in a statement. “David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”

Specific creative elements, as well as the producers and the location for the Colbert's new show, will be determined and announced at a later date.

Letterman was the host of "The Late Show" for 21 years and announced he would retire in 2015 during his show that aired on Thursday, April 3. A specific date for Letterman's final show has not yet been set. 

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” Colbert said in a statement. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.

“I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
