Cancer Action Network Pushes Astorino OK Of Westchester's E-Cigarette Ban

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- A nonprofit, advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society is praising a measure that, if signed into law in Westchester County, will curb the use of e-cigarettes in workplaces, restaurants and bars.

The use of e-cigarettes has soared in recent years, especially high school teens.

Michael Davoli, of the Cancer Action Network, said the move by the Westchester County Board of Legislators will protect residents from second-hand exposure to nicotine and “other potentially harmful chemicals.”

It will also strengthen enforcement of existing smoke-free laws, Davoli said, urging County Executive Robert Astorino to sign the legislation into law.

Sales of e-cigarettes have soared, Davoli said, adding that usage among high school students tripled nationally from 2011-13. The public health law is currently in effect in New York City along with Suffolk, Cattaraugus, Erie and Tompkins counties, he said.
