Clarification December 7, 2012: The public boat launch was incorrectly identified in this story.

CORTLANDT, N.Y. — Construction on a planned public boat launch on the Hudson River in Verplanck could be completed by spring, Cortlandt officials said.

"We have to have this constructed before the fish spawn" in late spring, Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi said. That guidance came from the Department of Environmental Conservation, she said.

The Frank Farrell Public Boat Launch will be built on the former James Martin property, formerly called the Peekskill Seaplane Base, on Riverview Avenue in Verplanck. The property was donated to the town by Martin after his death in 2006.

Frank Farrell said he hopes a rowing team can one day use the boat launch and nearby airplane hangars for storing supplies. But he said he hasn't seen a spike in public interest in the project.

The boat launch is expected to cost $80,000 to $90,000, about half of which will be paid for out of the recreation fund. Applicants to the Planning Board contribute to that recreation fund.
