Bedford Democrats Endorse Becker for Congress

The Town of Bedford’s Democratic Committee has endorsed cardiologist Dr. Richard Becker, the Cortlandt Town Councilman running in the Democratic primary to take on Nan Hayworth, Republican incumbent for the 19th Congressional District, in November’s election.

"We need a representative who will protect and fight for working families in the Hudson Valley rather than working tirelessly for deep-pocketed special interests and alongside fellow Tea Party ideologues,” said Bruce Yablon, chair of the Bedford Democratic Committee, which pledged its support to Becker March 14.

“Nan Hayworth abandoned the middle class, wants to drag women’s health care back to the 1950s and was MIA when Hurricane Irene struck,” he said.

The endorsement followed announcements of support by three labor unions: Local 137 of IUOE (Operating Engineers), Local 1 of IATSE (Stagehands), and the National Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA).

According to a press release from Becker’s campaign office, these three unions are the only labor organizations of any kind to back a candidate in the House race so far.

Local 137 Business Manager Al Girardi said his organization supports Becker because the candidate has ideas on how to get more Americans back to work.

"Our country needs to rebuild its infrastructure to create middle-class jobs now and build for the future," Girardi said. "We can't keep sending all our jobs overseas while hardworking men and women in the Hudson Valley are looking for work. We were impressed that Dr. Becker has been so outspoken on the need for strong labor unions, and we're proud to endorse him."

The Democratic primary for the 19th Congressional District will be June 26. The district includes parts of Westchester, including Cortlandt, Croton, Bedford, Mount Kisco, and Peekskill, as well as parts of Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess and Orange counties.
