Algonquin Pipeline Hearing Draws Big Crowd In Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- Hundreds of residents gathered in Cortlandt on Monday, Sept. 15, to oppose an expanded natural gas pipeline that would run through parts of Putnam, Westchester and Rockland counties, according to LoHud.com.

Critics of the plan submitted a petition to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, citing several reasons to halt expansion on the Algonquin, including the proposed pipeline's proximity to the Indian Point nuclear facility in Buchanan, LoHud.com reported.

Spectra Energy, the company that has proposed the expansion, says the project is needed to meet increasing demand in New England, LoHud.com said.
