The Daily Voice recently asked residents what new store they would like to see in their town and more than 150 residents chimed in with comments and likes, asking for stores ranging from Christmas Tree Shop, Whole Foods, a movie theater, a Kosher deli, a furniture store and an ice rink. Dozens of residents said they have a good idea of where they would like to see those new stores – in the vacant Food Emporium building on Downing Drive, which closed in 2010 after filing for bankruptcy.
“Trader Joe’s where Food Emporium was,” said reader Michelle Varela. “Hands down.”
Other residents suggested a place for families, like a Dave & Buster’s, movie theater or ice rink.
“A Dave & Buster’s would be great in the old Food Emporium,” said reader Lisa Fiore. “Would give kids a place to go.”
Council member Terrence Murphy previously said the Food Emporium space is a priority for the town and he has been working diligently to find a new tenant. If a prospective tenant is found, Murphy said in August, the town will have to take Food Emporium’s owners to bankruptcy court. The building is owned by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), which also has a grocery store in the downtown area.
Other Facebook readers, like Yorktown resident Irith Wardi Schechter, said they would like to see improvements at the Jefferson Valley Mall.
“(I) have lived in Yorktown for over 34 years and saw the JV mall being built. I brought my kids there and the mall was a nice place to go to,” Schechter said. “Now, it's a shame how it has become practically a ghost town, with stores leaving, no movie theater and the food court left with 4 or 5 food places? It needs a nice restaurant to draw people in.”
