Peekskill Firefighters Help HVHC Fight Cancer

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Hospital Center received a welcome donation from some of Peekskill's bravest to help fight cancer last week.

On Dec. 29 the city's Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2343 union presented hospital executives with a check for $4,500 to help support the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, which opened its doors in November.

“Their gift was greatly appreciated, and not only will it help the hospital, but it raised awareness about cancer prevention and the importance of screening,’’  said hospital president John Federspiel . “It’s enough that this very special group of dedicated professionals are on the job everyday protecting us, but for them to find the time and energy to do this type of public service is a true testament to their commitment to community.’’

All through the month of October the firefighters raised funds  by selling pink shirts for $20 as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The firefighters also hosted a Halloween party at the The Quiet Man Public House in Peekskill that included a raffle in an effort to raise additional funds.

The hospital is working to raise $5 million to pay for the $12 million new cancer center.  The funds raised by the firefighters will go towards the Ashikari Breast Center at HVHC, which is part of the new Cancer Center at the hospital. The center offers a team of well-known physicians in breast surgery and reconstruction.
