Girl Scouts Launch Booth Sales in Cortlandt

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Minivans and moms gathered in the parking lot of the Buchanan Village Hall Friday morning, to disburse an anticipated spring treat, Girl Scout cookies. This year the Kings Ferry Girl Scouts pre-sold 22,944 boxes of cookies. Cortlandt residents can look for Girl Scouts executing “phase two” of the cookie sale, at booths near train stations, shopping malls and coffee shops.

Lucy Casey, who runs the cookie program and is the leader of troop number 2903, made up of ninth-grade girls, said the troops collectively ordered 828 more boxes of cookies this year.

Of the cookies, 1,033 will be donated to local veterans hospitals and to troops overseas.

“We meet up with the Navy, and we load the cookies onto crates with the Navy,” Casey said about the more than 60,000 boxes of cookies donated to troops overseas last year. Girl Scouts from around the Hudson Valley gather at the New York Armory in Valhalla in June to give the cookies to the military, a program known as “Operation Cookie Drop.” In 2011, 849 Girl Scouts participated in the mission.

Girl Scouts sold more than $700 million worth of cookies in 2011, at $3.50 per box. Casey said .65 cents of each box goes to local troops, the rest goes to regional Girl Scouts operations and product cost.

In recognition of the 100th birthday of the Girl Scouts organization, Girl Scouts of America reported there will be a new cookie available this year, known as the Savannah Smile. The cookie is a crispy lemon wedge cookie dusted in powdered sugar.

Casey said Thin Mints and Samoas remain all-time favorites.
