Mainiero spearheaded the effort to obtain salvaged steel from the fallen World Trade Center and create a memorial, in honor of those who lost their lives that day.
Mainiero organized volunteers and established a 501(c)(3) foundation to raise money for the memorial. The first phase was built on the shores of the Hudson River in Croton Landing and dedicated Sept. 11, 2012.
“I am excited to accept Ms. Mainiero as the Town of Cortlandt’s selection for the second annual Women of Distinction Hall of Fame,” said State Sen. Greg Ball (R-NY District 40). “Ms. Mainiero has accomplished so much for our community and has selflessly dedicated her time to honor those that lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on 9/11.”
After working her way up from an executive secretary to a stockholder analyst, Mainiero left the Gillette Company after 20 years to pursue urban planning. Mainiero received her bachelor's and masters degrees from the urban planning department of Boston University and took a job at the Massachusetts Water and Resources Authority as a field assistant for the first major sewer interceptor project.
Mainiero then moved to New York, where she oversaw the environmental impact statements for various railroad extensions for Metro North Railroad.
Created and hosted by Ball, The Women Of Distinction Hall of Fame was designed to honor outstanding women from throughout the 40th Senate district. Towns, villages and cities districtwide have selected their nominees for the hall of fame ceremony, which will be hosted at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel.
