Winter Blues Arrive in Fall

‘Tis almost the holiday season, but the time for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is already upon us. SAD – also known as the “winter blues” – is a type of depression that occurs at the same time every year, when the short days of fall and winter limit peoples’ exposure to sunlight. Symptoms often start in the fall and can continue into the winter months, sapping energy and making sufferers feel moody. Approximately 20 percent of the US population suffers from the condition.

On Monday at 12 p.m., Norman Rosenthal , M.D, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health , will speak at the Conference Center at Northern Westchester Hospital about his research on SAD and the impact of Transcendental Meditation for reducing stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue. There will be a Q&A following the discussion.

Rosenthal, who originally identified the condition, is a psychiatrist and researcher in mind/body medicine. He is the author of the book, “Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation and Winter Blues.” (He will be available to sign copies of his book.)

Seating is limited, so please arrive by 11:45 a.m. A light lunch will be served.

Please arrive by 11:45. For more information and to RSVP, please call Cathy, at (914) 666-1557.
