"Food, Inc.," the 2008 documentary film by Robert Kenner, was an eye-opening look into the nation's food industry that exposed the American consumer, to the unseemly underbelly of America's food chain. The movie, something of an inconvenient truth for agribusiness, is being rebroadcast on PBS Aug. 9.
The movie follows the country's food supply and points out that corporations controlling it put profit ahead of consumer health, the American farmer, the safety of workers and the environment.
Food, Inc. illustrates how, though we might now have meatier chickens, succulent steaks and insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, we also have new strains of E. coli the bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually.
The movie features interviews with Eric Schlosser ("Fast Food Nation"), Michael Pollan ("The Omnivore's Dilemma") and social entrepreneurs such as Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin.
