Student-Scientists Experiment At Westchester Community College

OSSINING, N.Y. -- It's never too early to introduce children to the incredible world of science. While the Ossining Extension Center at Westchester Community College normally prepares students for a career in healthcare, the center's new Afterschool Science Academy allows children to break out the test tubes in a fun learning environment.

The Ossining Extension Center of Westchester Community College opened in January 2001 and features a variety of scientific and medical teaching tools. These include a health skills lab, complete with hospital beds and other clinical care equipment, a fully equipped biological science lab, a computer lab and more. At the Afterschool Science Academy, children will work in these facilities, while being guided by college professors and volunteer counselors. "Our fall program for children opens the door to topics related to science in a fun and educational way," said Nicole Joseph, director of the Ossining Extension Center.

The Afterschool Science Academy offers course topics related to engineering, renewable and non-renewable energy sources and understanding the human anatomy. "We want to give our students the option to select something that they find exciting," said Joseph. "We don't want to put them in a classroom and study a textbook. We offer hands-on experiments so the kids can better understand what they are being taught."

The interactive experiment allows students to undergo projects such as building a pullback car, designing their own wind turbine models or learning how the brain works. Once children select a program, they are led by instructors who help them understand the importance of science. "We think the science program will open up doors for children to discover even more about the topics they are being introduced to," said Joseph.

The Afterschool Science Academy will run every Tuesday beginning on Oct. 11 and end on Nov. 15. at the Ossining Extension Center at Westchester Community College. For more information, visit their website.
