PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- At Rick's Seafood in Mahopac, you can see the fish you'll be eating in glass displays around the restaurant, but you'll never smell it.
Owner Rick Megna of Mahopac believes people should be able to enjoy fresh, quality seafood in even the most casual of environments.
His restaurant and fishery, Rick's Seafood, is just that: a casual eatery that proudly displays its fresh seafood, delivered daily, so customers know they're getting the bang for their buck.
Megna's love for seafood stemmed from his childhood, which was spent in Rhode Island fishing and clamming. After working in finance for some time, he opened Rick's in 2001 and never looked back.
"We've become a real staple in the community," he said. "There isn't really any other place like this in the area."
The restaurant is next to Putnam Wine and Liquor and guests are encouraged to pick up their own bottle of wine to enjoy with lunch or dinner -- and there's no corkage fee.
According to Megna, with a menu sporting 15 fin-fish selections, shellfish, raw bar, steaks (courtesy of Megna's other Mahopac restaurant, Char), salads, homemade soups, pastas and more, even those who don't like fish can find something to enjoy.
Among their most popular dishes are the coconut shrimp, Asian calamari, horseradish-crusted Chilean sea bass, and sesame tuna.
Rick's Seafood is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 8 p.m. on Sunday. It is at 545 Route 6.
