The lawyer and politician turns 71 today.

Pataki, former mayor of the historic Hudson River town, was elected as New York’s 53rd governor in 1994, beating incumbent Democrat Mario Cuomo.

Like Cuomo, he went on to serve three terms.

A Republican, he had previously served on the state Assembly and Senate.

Last year, the Garrison resident threw his hat in the ring for the GOP nomination in the upcoming presidential elections.

He later withdrew his name from contention.

Pataki’s paternal grandfather came to the United States in 1908 and worked in a hat factory in Peekskill.

Pataki’s father was a mailman, volunteer firefighter and had a truck farm where he grew tomatoes, corn and other vegetables.

After graduating from Peekskill High School, Pataki got a scholarship to attend Yale University.

He later got his law degree from Columbia Law School.

He is married to Libby, nee Mary Elizabeth Rowland. The couple have four children.
