The singer and actress turns 46 on Sunday.
McDonald was born on July 3, 1970, in West Berlin, Germany, where her father was stationed with the U.S. Army. She was raised in Fresno, Calif.
The Tony-winning performer has appeared on stage in both dramas and musicals such as “Carousel,” “Master Class,” “Ragtime,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” and “Porgy and Bess.”
She has an active concert and recording career and appears in operas.
McDonald is also known for her role as Dr. Naomi Bennett on the ABC medical drama, “Private Practice."
McDonald most recently starred on Broadway as the vaudeville performer Lottie Gee in the musical “Shuffle Along.”
She married bassist Peter Donovan in 2000. Now divorced, the couple had one daughter, Zoe.
McDonald married Will Svenson, an actor, director and singer, in 2012.
They are now expecting their first child and she is scheduled to go on maternity leave from “Shuffle Along” at the end of this month.
