Art Of Cancer Survivors Showcased At Hudson Valley Hospital Center

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - As part of a national month honoring cancer survivors, the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center at Hudson Valley Hospital Center is having an exhibition of works of art by cancer survivors, their friends and family. "Lilly Oncology On Canvas" will be on display in the Cancer Center for one more week.

"It provides comfort that someone is expressing beauty," said Diane Castro, a registered nurse at the hospital, clinical educator and former cancer patient. Castro has been cancer-free for 15 years. "There is a positive effect," she said about the art exhibit at the center.

June is National Cancer Survivors Month, a time when many hospitals and cancer support organizations have events in solidarity with America’s more than 12 million cancer survivors. The show will be in the lobby of the center until July 11.

“We have many cancer survivors in our community and even among our staff at the Hospital who have inspiring stories to tell,’’ said John Federspiel, president of Hudson Valley Hospital Center. “This is an opportunity for them to connect and share these experiences with other cancer survivors, friends and family. We invite the community to attend and be part of this very moving event.’’

The art exhibit, which tours nationwide, showcases select pieces of art from the 2011 "Lilly Oncology On Canvas" competition. Themes range from fear and hope to loss and survival to isolation and the embrace of family and friends.

Launched in 2004, the "Lilly Oncology On Canvas" Art Competition and Exhibition invites people from the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, who are diagnosed with any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and health care providers, to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning. Winners’ prizes consist of donations made to the cancer-related charities of their choice. Art from the competition tours hospitals, cancer centers and cancer advocacy group events.
