Garfunkel, one half of the famed duo Simon & Garfunkel, has been doing intimate warmup shows as he battles back from a vocal ailment that nearly cost him his famous singing voice.

"I know I am supposed to have more hair and be taller," Garfunkel told the crowd when he came on stage. "This is what you get."

Garfunkel began the show by reading a poem about what it was like to be in Simon & Garfunkel as they were on the cusp of fame and where his life is now, taking his 5-year-old son to a birthday party that featured a lame magician named Domino.

The singer, who is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, performed classics like "April Come She Will" and "The Boxer."

"There's something surreal about Art Garfunkel doing 'The Boxer' at Harvey School," Garfunkel said. "It's great to be here at this wonderful school."

Garfunkel was accompanied by guitarist Tab Laven while he sang songs like "Scarborough Fair."

"I think of Paul Simon when I sing Scarborough Fair," Garfunkel said. "I'm at Columbia Records, Studio A and he is on my right shoulder."

A part-time actor, Garfunkel read a poem about working with Jack Nicholson on the film "Carnal Knowledge". He said his five favorite songwriters were Stephen Sondheim, Jimmy Webb, Simon, James Taylor and Randy Newman.

"Paul Simon has been a big part of my life," Garfunkel said, before reading a poem he read at Simon's birthday that segued into a performance of "Sounds of Silence".

Garfunkel, who lost his voice three years ago, said it has been a tough crusade but his voice has been better than ever. During an audience Q-n-A, he said "Kathy's Song" was the Simon and Garfunkel son he loved the most.

"We didn't walk away mutually," Garfunkel said of his partnership with Simon. "I don't know if we'll ever get back together. Ask him."

Though he was willing to show off his new voice, Garfunkel remains camera shy. The Harvey School said he was uncomfortable with having his photo taken and did not allow any photos during his performance.
