What To Do Around Cortlandt This Weekend

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - The Village of Croton observes Veterans Day on Sunday, and the Croton Yacht Club holds a luncheon that's free for veterans and active-duty members of the military, immediately following the ceremony. There are also chances to attend art openings, and learn more about mobile phone photography.

Friday, Nov. 9

Let's Pretend With Nora: 1:45 p.m. Songs and movement for children ages 2 to 5, at the Croton Free Library, 171 Cleveland Drive, Croton.

Couples Cooking: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Chef Rachel Mariani teaches couples, spouses or "dates" to cook with farm-fresh produce from Hilltop Hanover Farm. Couples are encouraged to bring a bottle of wine and enjoy the dinner together, at 1271 Hanover St., Yorktown. Admission is $40. 

Saturday, Nov. 10

Hudson River Photography with Your Mobile Phone: 9 a.m. Bring any mobile electronic device to the Croton Point Park Nature Center and learn to capture the beauty of autumn light.

Parents and Children As Authors: 10:30 a.m. This two-part workshop helps parents and children create a professional-looking book they can read together over and over again. The workshop is for parents and children ages 5 and up, and is presented by the Hendrick Hudson Free Library. To register, call 914-739-5654, or visit the library at 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose.

Early American Corn Husk Dolls: 11 a.m. Children can learn to make these early American "action figures" at the 2 Hands 2 Learn event. "Birds and Botanicals" Art Reception: 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. See Barbara Smith's exhibit in the second floor corridor of the Hendrick Hudson Free Library, 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose.

Lamentations and Celebrations: 8 p.m. The Asbury Methodist Church presents eight chorale anthems to benefit the Cortlandt Emergency Food Bank. Admission is $20 for adults, and $10 for children and seniors. Children are welcome to attend, free. The church is located at 17 Old Post Road, Croton.

Sunday, Nov. 11

Croton Veterans Day Ceremony: 11 a.m. The Village of Croton will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Corners, at Old Post Road South and Cleveland Drive.

Croton Yacht Club Veterans Day Luncheon: 12 p.m. This event immediately follows the Village of Croton's Veterans Day ceremony, and provides a free lunch to all village veterans and active-duty military members. Suggested donation for non-veteran attendees is $10. The club is located at 6 Elliott Way, Croton.

Archeology Association Open House: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. The Lower Hudson Chapter of the New York State Archeology Association holds an open house at the Croton Point Park Nature Center, located in Croton Point Park. Members will be present to answer questions about exhibits or association activities.
