Rep. Lowey To Visit Cortlandt's Hudson Valley Hospital

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) will see affordable health care in action during a tour of the Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen – part of Hudson Valley Hospital Center's healthy eating initiative – at 10 a.m. July 21 at Dempsey House.

Hudson Valley Hospital Center is located at 1992 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor.

Children from the Peekskill School District will prepare breakfast for Lowey under the direction of Chef Peter X. Kelly and the kitchen’s coordinator, Michael Bulger.

A schedule of events for the day is below.

10 a.m. - Congresswoman Nita Lowey tours Organic Garden.

10:15 a.m. – Participates in demonstration by Peekskill school children.

10:30 a.m. – Addresses group about importance of initiatives like HVHC’s Harvest for Health in success of affordable health care.

Hudson Valley Hospital Center is the only hospital in Westchester to offer healthy cooking classes,  in its new Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen. Through its teaching kitchen, organic garden, twice-monthly Farmers’ Markets and new locally sourced food service, the hospital is working with patients and the community to teach managing health through diet and lifestyle changes.

It’s all part of an effort to reduce healthcare costs as the country moves toward a model of prevention versus treatment in the healthcare industry.

Classes in the kitchen range from general cooking instruction to very specific curriculum for diabetics, cancer and heart patients, breastfeeding moms and those with gluten sensitivities.

A program designed especially for children - The Young Chefs of the Hudson Valley- works with children ages 11-13 in Peekskill and other local schools to prevent childhood obesity.
