On a Sept. 1 Facebook post, Peekskill United posted a letter Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez (D-East Harlem) sent expressing his support for candidate Luis Segarra. Segarra is running on the Republican and the Conservative lines and in the Sept. 12 Democratic primary.

"I would like to extend my support to Mr. Luis Segarra for candidate for Councilmember for the City of Peekskill," Rodriguez wrote in a letter. "Since my introduction to Mr. Segarra he has been an excellent example of a person with good moral character. I truly believe Mr. Segarra would be an asset to the City of Peekskill and its businesses and residents."

In the post, Peekskill United congratulated Segarra on his "very prestigious endorsement."

In a press release issued by the Peekskill Democrats, Rodriguez said he did not endorse him.

"While Luis Segarra has been a long-time friend and supporter, I did not endorse anyone in the Democratic Primary for common council in the City of Peekskill," said Rodriguez.

The Democrats say the "fake" endorsement was aimed to mislead voters. Brendon Fitzgerald, a spokesman for Peekskill United, said the Democrats are engaging in word smithing.

"No, Rodriguez did not endorse anyone for the primary on Sept. 12," Fitzgerald said. "He did, however, send the letter attached to endorse/support Segarra. We at Peekskill United never stated he did that. This is a clear attempt to confuse voters and make false accusations about Segarra."
